The Deva Sanniya aka Malady Spirit
Masks are integral to the healing ceremonies of the Sanni yakuma ritual, where they are worn by Edura, who are essentially Sri Lankan artists and exorcists. These masks, numbering eighteen, each have a specific purpose in curing different illnesses. Sanni yakuma, also called Daha ata sanniya, is a traditional Sinhalese exorcism ritual featuring eighteen masked dances, representing various ailments.
Deva Sanniya/Malady Spirit (Demon of Deity) masks represent a demon associated with burning sensation in the body, rapid pulse, high fever, flatulence, indigestion, faintness, and bulging eyes. These symptoms, resembling those of chickenpox, measles, mumps, and other ailments considered as diseases of the gods. During the ritual, demons believed to cause illness are summoned and then instructed to cease troubling humans before being dismissed.
